Tsunami Monument

It is located at the south western corner of Male’, just a short walk from the Villingili Ferry Terminal and South Harbour Food Court. It is a nice open space, covered in white sand and has traditional wood and rope seating (locally known as Joali). It’s a great spot to take a break, enjoy the ocean view and the boats entering the harbour.

This monument is dedicated for those who lost their lives in the South East Asian Tsunami of 26th December 2004. The death toll for Maldives is 82.

This monument is famous for its unique design. The steel balls symbolize the country’s twenty atolls. and the vertical iron rods signifies the rising of the waters.

Best time to visit is early morning or for the sunset.
